CE Meaning

CE meaning:

CE stands for "Conformité Européenne" and is a mark that indicates that a product meets the requirements of European directives. The purpose of CE marking is to promote free trade in safe products in EEA member states. Due to a European framework of requirements (where available), trade is no longer hampered by national legislation. The CE standard relates to legal requirements in the field of safety, health and the environment. When a product is CE marked or CE labeled, the product has access to the international market within the European Economic Area (EEA), European Free Trade Association (EFTA) and Turkey.

The CE mark is applied to products by manufacturers or importers themselves. The manufacturer or importer hereby declares that the product meets the requirements. Products for which a European directive exists must always comply with the directive and be provided with CE marking. However, they may only be marketed if a conformity assessment has established that the directive is being complied with. The manufacturer or importer then declares with an EC declaration of conformity that the product meets the requirements and can then affix the CE mark to the product. CE marking is therefore a form of self-certification by the manufacturer or importer, but is called product certification as soon as there are greater risks on a certain category of products and therefore a type approval must be carried out by a designated body (Notified Body) such as TÜV Nederland based on specific technical standards. It is the responsibility of the manufacturer or importer to determine if this is necessary. (Source: TUV Nord Service GmbH)
